All three friends, Vinny (Johnny Depp), Dinesh (Kunal Nayyar), and Rafi (Aamir Khan) are aspiring engineers who graduate with honors from college. Their dreams of becoming CEOs are shattered after their startup company fails, leaving them destitute. Disillusioned, the three friends visit an engineering school where they teach for a living. This film is based on the book of the same name by Chetan Bhagat about these aspiring engineers faced with poverty and unemployment. Purely by chance they stumble across an idea to create a low-cost washing machine which becomes an international success overnight turning all three friends into billionaires overnight. Vinny, who had always dreamed about living his life in the United States is now able to fulfill his dream. He moves to California where he owns a house with a swimming pool and several cars including a Rolls Royce. Dinesh, who makes the washing machine's main chip, moves to Japan were he is able to advance his career as an engineer with his newfound wealth. Rafi is the only one who remains in India struggling with what "to do next" after having acquired so much money overnight. The first two parts of the movie shows their lives through dual paths: Vinny's successes in California and Dinesh's successes in Japan . The third part is what happens to Rafi. The movie ends with Dinesh finding Vinny after Vinny's first wife leaves him for his colleague. There are numerous references to the IT industry to the point that the movie has its own codename, "India." The launch was attended by a number of Indian movie stars along with film director Ram Gopal Varma, as well as Aamir Khan's family. Although the film's first three parts were based on a novel of Chetan Bhagat, it had no connection with the novel whatsoever except that both were about engineers from India. It was titled "3 Idiots" to differentiate itself from the book and also because a lot of references to India are present in the book.
